Van creatieve ideeën naar perfecte uitvoering

Dit project is een duidelijk voorbeeld van hoe twee totaal verschillende werelden elkaar ontmoeten. De creatieve ontwerper met waanzinnige ideeën enerzijds en de technische vakmensen die deze creatieve gedachten omzetten in een tastbaar eindresultaat. Waar ze elkaar ontmoeten? Bij de betrokkenheid die ze voor het project en hun werk hebben.

De ‘Roof for stray thoughts’ is te vinden in het hart van de wereldstad Sydney. De opvallend gele luifel bedekt een dakterras en voegt een onderscheidend nieuw icoon toe aan de stedelijke omgeving van de stad. De organische vormen doen denken aan de groei van een waterplant maar vormen tegelijkertijd een intrigerend onbekend geometrisch patroon.

Cruciaal bij dit project was dat de vervormingen van de profielen minimaal moesten zijn. Alle elementen zijn immers zichtbaar. Zo moesten de u-profielen met een minimale tolerantie op de radius gewalst worden omdat ze later samengesteld zouden worden tot koker. Na verschillende proefbuigingen en mock-ups heeft opdrachtgever CIG dit project toevertrouwd aan Van Rijsoort Bending.

Het buigwerk bestond uit:

• Stalen koker 250x100x10 mm
• Stalen koker 300x100x8 mm
• Rvs u-profielen 40x180x40x6 mm

Naast het walsen van 161 profielen zijn ook alle onderdelen pasgezaagd, zowel haaks als onder verstek.

Wie nu een bezoek brengt aan het dakterras kan zijn gedachten de vrije loop laten en genieten van bijzondere schaduwpartijen en mooie reflecties van de intense Australische zon. Het bijzondere resultaat van de creatieve invalshoeken van de ontwerper, in perfectie uitgevoerd door betrokken vakmensen.

Over het ontwerp
“The organically flowing canopy of interwoven ringlets that covers the roof terrace is visible from afar, adding a distinctive new icon to the urban environment of Sydney. The signal-yellow structure is reminiscent of the organic growth of an aquatic plant and is, at the same time, an intriguingly unfamiliar geometrical pattern. The underlying structure is composed of arcs that reflect the scale of the architecture and of the human body – the largest arc, if it were standing upright, would encircle the full height of the tower; the smallest, the height of a visitor. Seen from the floors above, the sculpture looks as if it were nestled into the urban space, forming a transitional area between the new tower and the heritage tower.

The crisp geometry of the canopy produces enthralling patterns of dappled shadows on the ground below. The varying zones of shadow and light, like the rippling shade created by waves or a tree moving in the breeze, create particularly welcoming spaces for meeting, rest, and recreation. The shadows move in relation to the changing position of the sun with dramatic intensity and clarity in the Australian sunlight. Fragments of the local surroundings are captured in sections of the ringlets that have been polished to a mirror finish, distorting and remixing the city above the visitors’ heads. The curving, bright-yellow lines of the sculpture can be glimpsed from the street level, jutting out beyond the edges of the underlying podium. Catching the luminous rays of the sun, the powerful yellow colour contrasts starkly with the architecture of the city around it.
